Toby spent more than three decades in a career that demanded precision, patience and attention to detail. It was that discipline, not fashion or chance, that led him, after training in jewellery making in Aix-en-Provence, to choose a second craft.
He now works from his studio in Narbonne. He selects moonstones, shapes silver, and polishes every surface by hand. Slowly, and in the right order.
Jewellery is no longer a pastime.
It is his work.
I have collected and studied moonstones for more than thirty years. Every stone I work with has first been looked at for a long time, in morning light, in afternoon light, placed down and picked up again dozens of times.
It is not slowness. It is precision.
A wide band, hammered by hand. The stone sits at the centre, held by a low setting that lets it breathe.
A simple, direct teardrop form. The moonstone sits at the centre, flush set. The silver falls away.
A fine bangle, almost weightless. A small moonstone set by hand, discreet and precise.
A new piece is in progress.
It will be ready when it is ready.
